Stand outside the Gold Souk in Deira on a busy morning and you will see small groups paused in front of glowing boards, phones in hand, doing quick maths. Those boards are the starting point for almost every gold purchase in Dubai. Learn to read them and you will shop with confidence, whether you are buying a wedding bangle, a gift chain or a small coin for savings.
What the Boards Actually Show
The boards are updated by the Dubai Jewellery Group, an industry body that sets a recommended retail rate for participating shops across Dubai. You will see the same figures on screens at the souk entrances and inside individual stores, because consistency is the point. You can walk from shop to shop knowing the underlying gold value has not changed just because the doorway did.
Each board lists prices per gram by purity. Most residents look first for 24-karat, pure gold and the benchmark, then 22-karat, 21-karat and 18-karat below it. The lower the karat, the more other metals are mixed in for strength, and the lower the price per gram. Most traditional souk jewellery is 22-karat, while many diamond-set pieces are 18-karat to hold stones securely. Rates are in dirhams for the metal alone. They exclude making charges and VAT, which is why two shops can quote different totals for the same weight while both honestly using the same board rate.
How the Dubai Rate Is Set
Dubai does not set its price in isolation. The board follows the international spot price of gold, which moves throughout the trading day on global markets. When that price rises or falls noticeably, the Dubai Jewellery Group revises the local rate, sometimes more than once in a day. A price you saw at breakfast can therefore be slightly different by evening, and an assistant may check the screen again just before writing your bill.
The local rate converts the global price into dirhams per gram for each karat. Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, currency swings matter less here than in many countries, but the dollar gold price still drives everything. Treat the board as a live reference, not a fixed daily promise, and confirm the shop is using the latest update for a substantial purchase.
From Board Rate to the Price You Pay
The calculation is simple once you know the steps. The shop weighs the piece, multiplies the weight by the board rate for that karat, then adds making charges for craftsmanship and design. Charges vary widely: a plain machine-made chain costs far less to make than a hand-worked bridal set, and branded showrooms usually charge more than small souk shops.
- Gold value: weight in grams multiplied by the board rate for the correct karat
- Making charges: per gram or as a percentage, and the part most open to negotiation
- Stones and extras: diamonds, gems or special finishes priced separately
- VAT: added at the prevailing rate and shown on your receipt
Ask the assistant to break the total into those parts before you agree. Reputable shops do this willingly, and it makes comparing similar pieces possible. If you are given only a lump sum, ask for the weight, rate and making charge separately. Keep your receipt safe, because it makes any future exchange or resale much simpler.
Practical Tips for Board-Watching in Deira
Check the rate on the day you buy, just before you start shopping, and photograph the board so the figures are in your pocket. Compare the in-store screen with the public board; they should match. If gold is moving quickly, do not be surprised if a shop pauses briefly while a new rate comes through.
Haggling is normal and expected in the souk, but it applies to making charges, not the board rate. The gold value is set by the market. You save by comparing making charges across three or four shops, asking about buy-back terms, and choosing simpler designs on a tight budget. For coins or bars bought as savings, residents focus on the lowest making charge, since that premium is hardest to recover on resale.
Once you understand the boards, the Gold Souk stops feeling mysterious and starts feeling transparent. You still get the colour and glittering windows, but you also know how your price was built.
