Medical Fitness Test for Beginners: A Plain-English Starter Guide

What the UAE medical fitness test involves, where to go in Dubai, what to bring, typical costs and how long results take for a residence visa.

The medical fitness test is a standard health screening that almost every new UAE resident passes through when applying for a residence visa, and it is far less daunting than it sounds. In most cases it means a blood test and a chest X-ray at an official medical fitness centre, takes under an hour at the centre itself, and the result usually arrives within one to two working days by email or through the Dubai Health app.

What the Test Is For

The screening exists to protect public health. It checks for a defined list of communicable conditions set out in UAE law, principally HIV, pulmonary tuberculosis, and, for certain job categories such as domestic workers, food handlers and salon staff, additional items like hepatitis and syphilis. The list of conditions and the job categories they apply to are fixed by federal resolution, so the centre staff are simply applying national rules rather than making personal judgements about you.

You will need the test when you take up a new residence visa, when you renew in some categories, and occasionally when changing jobs or visa type. Most renewals for ordinary employee visas no longer require a fresh test every time, but rules vary by category, so follow the instructions on your entry permit or ask your employer’s PRO before booking anything.

Where to Go and What It Costs

In Dubai the tests are carried out at Dubai Health medical fitness centres spread across the emirate, including centres in areas such as Al Barsha, Jebel Ali, Al Rashidiya and Deira, plus premium occupational health centres. Choose the centre nearest to your home or office, because you may need to return if a repeat X-ray is requested. Many centres accept walk-ins, but booking through the Dubai Health website or app shortens the wait considerably.

As a guide, a standard test typically costs in the region of a few hundred dirhams, with express and VIP services costing more for faster results. Treat published figures as estimates only, and check the current fee for your exact visa category on the official Dubai Health portal before you go, since charges differ for occupational categories and faster turnaround options.

What to Take With You

  • Your original passport, and a copy
  • Your entry permit or visa application documents
  • A recent passport-style photograph
  • Your Emirates ID, if you already have one from a previous visa
  • The application form typed at a registered centre or completed online, where required
  • Payment card for the test fee

Wear something simple for the chest X-ray: you will be asked to remove metal jewellery and change into a gown if needed, and women who are pregnant should tell staff before the X-ray so the team can advise on shielding or deferral according to the rules. Fasting is not normally required for the standard test, which surprises many first-timers who arrive hungry at 8 a.m. unnecessarily.

On the Day, and Getting Your Result

The visit usually flows in one direction: registration and payment, a blood sample, then the chest X-ray, and you are done. In a quiet centre the whole thing can take 20 minutes; at peak times allow up to two hours. Results for a standard application typically arrive within one to two working days, while express services can return them the same day. A fitness certificate is issued digitally and feeds straight into the visa process, so you rarely need to collect paper copies.

If something needs a second look, do not panic. Blurred X-rays are retaken, and some findings simply trigger a referral or a follow-up appointment rather than a refusal. Certain treated or old conditions are assessed under the published medical rules, and the centre will guide you on the next step, whether that is treatment through the public health system or further reports from a specialist. The important thing is to attend any follow-up promptly and keep copies of every report you are given.

FAQ

How long is the medical fitness certificate valid?
The result is used for the visa application it was taken for and is generally valid for a limited window, typically around three months. If your visa processing stalls beyond that, you may be asked to repeat the test.

Can I eat before the test?
Yes. The standard residency screening does not require fasting. If your employer has booked extra occupational health checks at the same visit, ask them in advance whether any of those need fasting blood work.

What happens if I fail the screening?
It depends on the condition and your job category. Some findings lead to treatment and reassessment, while a small number of conditions make a person unfit for residency under current law. The centre explains the outcome and the available next steps in writing.
