Retirement does not have to mean the end of working life, and many Dubai employers value the experience, reliability and mentoring skills that older professionals bring. If you are a retiree applying for full-time, part-time or consultancy work in Dubai, your CV needs to show recent, relevant value quickly — recruiters here scan fast, favour clear formatting, and care far more about what you can still deliver than about a long list of early-career roles.
What Dubai Employers Look For
Hiring managers in the UAE typically expect a two-page CV with a short professional summary, measurable achievements and clear dates. For a retiree, the winning angle is depth: decades of problem-solving, client relationships and calm judgement under pressure. Lead with that. State plainly near the top what kind of work you are seeking — part-time, project-based, advisory or full-time — because employers often assume a retired applicant wants something you may not, or vice versa.
Be honest about your visa and work status too. If you hold a retirement visa, a Golden Visa or are on a spouse’s sponsorship, say so in one line; being immediately eligible to work removes a major concern for employers and can move your application up the pile.
Structuring the CV
- Start with your name, Dubai location, phone, email and LinkedIn profile if you have one
- Add a three-line summary: your field, your years of experience and the value you offer now
- List your most recent 10–15 years of work in detail, with achievements in numbers where possible
- Summarise earlier roles in a brief “Earlier career” section of two or three lines
- Finish with qualifications, languages, IT skills and your visa status
Making Experience Read as Current
Recent short courses, volunteer work, board roles, mentoring and freelance projects all count — include them, because they show you are active and up to date. Refresh your technology skills before applying: familiarity with Microsoft 365, Zoom or Teams, and common tools in your field is assumed in most Dubai offices. If there are gaps since your last role, a single honest line (“Retired in 2022; consulting and volunteering since”) reads far better than leaving dates vague.
- Use a clean, modern template with no photo unless the role specifically asks
- Quantify achievements: budgets handled, teams led, savings delivered
- Tailor the summary and skills section to each job advert’s keywords
- Keep it to two pages; three at most for very senior specialists
- Have someone proofread — small typos undermine a senior profile
Where Retirees Find Opportunities
LinkedIn is the main professional channel in Dubai, supported by job boards such as GulfTalent, Naukrigulf and Indeed UAE. Do not overlook direct approaches: schools, clinics, professional firms, community organisations and consultancies often welcome experienced part-time help and may not advertise it. Networking through business councils, alumni groups and community associations is particularly effective at this career stage, because many senior roles are filled by recommendation.
A Note on Age and Expectations
Some adverts mention preferred age ranges, but plenty of employers — especially in education, healthcare, finance and advisory work — actively recruit seasoned staff. Salary expectations should reflect the arrangement: part-time and consultancy day rates are common, and it is normal to negotiate hours, remote days and contract length up front. Make sure any paid work matches the conditions of your visa; a retirement visa does not itself include the right to work, so the employer will normally arrange a work permit.
A Short Cover Note Helps
Dubai recruiters often read the application email or LinkedIn message before the CV itself, so write three or four lines to go with it: who you are, the kind of role you want, one standout achievement, and your availability. For retirees this note does important work — it frames your application as a deliberate choice to keep contributing, not a reluctant return to work. Mention any connection to the company, such as a referral or a past collaboration, and close by offering a conversation at their convenience. Keep the tone confident and brief; seniority shows in economy of words. Save your CV as a PDF named with your name and the role, and if you apply through a portal, paste the same short summary into the profile section so the keywords match the advert.
FAQ
Should I include my full work history from the start of my career?
No. Detail the last 10–15 years and compress earlier roles into a short summary, so the CV stays focused and within two pages.
Do I need to state my age or date of birth?
It is not required. Many CVs in the region still include it, but you can leave it out and let your experience speak for itself.
Can I work in Dubai on a retirement visa?
Not on the visa alone. Your employer must obtain a work permit for you, which is a routine process for legitimate companies.
