How to Sell Your Car Safely to a Private Buyer: Step-by-Step With Costs and Documents

Sell your car privately in Dubai the safe way: documents to prepare, clearing fines, secure payment, RTA transfer steps, guide costs and red flags to avoid.

Selling your car privately in Dubai usually gets you a better price than a dealer trade-in, but it also puts the paperwork, the payment risk and the transfer firmly in your hands. The safe route is simple: clear your fines, agree the price in writing, take payment in a secure way, and complete the ownership transfer with the buyer at an official centre before you hand over the keys for good. This step-by-step guide walks you through it.

Before You Advertise: Prepare the Car and Paperwork

Start by checking the car is legally ready to sell. Log in to the RTA, Dubai Police or Ministry of Interior channels and confirm there are no unpaid traffic fines, Salik issues or a bank loan still registered against the vehicle. If the car was bought with finance, you will normally need the bank’s clearance or to settle the loan as part of the sale, because ownership cannot transfer cleanly while a mortgage is recorded.

Gather the documents you will need:

  • Your Emirates ID and driving licence
  • The vehicle registration card (Mulkiya)
  • Valid insurance details for the car
  • Service history and spare keys, which help the price
  • Bank clearance letter if the car was financed
  • A passing vehicle test result, if the buyer or centre requires one for transfer

Wash the car, photograph it honestly in daylight, and write an advert that states the model year, mileage, specification, accident history and reason for sale. Honest adverts attract serious buyers and reduce arguments later.

Meeting Buyers Safely

Meet in a public, busy place during the day, ideally near your home community or a registration centre, and take a friend if you can. For test drives, check the buyer’s driving licence first, keep your documents with you, and ride along. Never hand over the car for an unsupervised drive, and never accept a screenshot of a bank transfer as proof of payment, because screenshots are easy to fake.

Agree the final price only after the buyer has inspected the car. If the buyer wants an independent inspection at a garage or testing centre, that is normal and a good sign; agree who pays for it before you go. As a guide, a pre-purchase inspection typically costs around AED 350 to AED 600 depending on depth, but confirm the current price with the centre you choose.

The Transfer: Step by Step

  1. Agree the price and who pays the transfer fee and any inspection cost.
  2. Clear all fines on the car and on your file that could block the transfer.
  3. Meet the buyer at an RTA customer happiness centre or an authorised vehicle registration centre.
  4. Present your Emirates ID, the Mulkiya and the buyer’s Emirates ID and licence.
  5. Receive payment in a verified form before signing the transfer — a manager’s cheque or a confirmed bank transfer you can see in your own account, not a screenshot.
  6. Complete the ownership transfer; the buyer arranges new insurance in their name and pays the transfer and plate fees.
  7. Cancel or transfer your own insurance and claim any refundable unused premium.
  8. Remove your Salik tag arrangements as advised by the centre and keep copies of everything.

As a guide, RTA transfer fees for a light vehicle have typically been in the region of a few hundred dirhams, plus plate and knowledge fees, but amounts change, so check the current fees on the RTA portal before the appointment and agree in advance who pays what. Never sign transfer papers against a promise to pay later.

Payment Red Flags to Walk Away From

Cash in a public centre is common for lower-value cars, but for larger sums insist on a bank-verified method. Walk away from buyers who ask you to transfer ownership first and pay tomorrow, who offer a personal cheque from someone else, who want the car left registered in your name “for a few weeks”, or who pressure you to rush because they are leaving tonight. While the car is in your name, its fines and liabilities point at you.

Once the transfer is done, notify your insurer the same day. Keeping insurance running on a car you no longer own wastes money, and many insurers will refund the unused portion less an administration charge, as a guide.

FAQ

Can I sell a car with a bank loan on it? Yes, but the loan must be settled and cleared, often using the buyer’s payment at the bank, before or during the transfer process.

Who pays the transfer fee? There is no fixed rule; it is negotiable, though buyers commonly pay the transfer and new plate costs. Agree it before you travel to the centre.

Should I let a buyer test drive alone? No. Check their licence, keep your documents, and always ride along on the test drive.
