How to Report a Lost Bank Card in the UAE and Block It Before It Is Used

Lost your bank card in the UAE? Freeze it in the app within a minute, report it on the 24-hour hotline, dispute fraud and update your saved payments in order.

If your bank card is lost or stolen in the UAE, block it immediately — the fastest route is your bank’s mobile app, where most cards can be frozen in under a minute — and then call the bank’s 24-hour hotline to report it formally and order a replacement. Speed matters more than anything else: contactless and online transactions can drain an account quickly, and reporting promptly also protects you, because your liability for fraudulent use generally stops once the bank has been told.

Quick facts

  • First action: freeze the card in the banking app the moment you notice it missing
  • Second action: call the bank’s 24/7 hotline (printed on statements and in the app) to register the loss and request a replacement
  • Replacement time: typically 3–5 working days; express delivery options may exist — check the official app/portal for the current fee, typically around AED 25–75
  • Cost of blocking: free; you pay only for the replacement card if your bank charges one
  • If fraud has occurred: raise a dispute with the bank at once and, for significant theft, file a Dubai Police report via the app or eCrime platform

Step by step: block first, then tidy up

  1. Freeze the card in the app. Open your banking app, find the card, and use “block”, “freeze” or “report lost”. This stops new transactions instantly while you think. If you do not have the app, skip straight to the phone call.
  2. Check the last transactions. Before or just after freezing, scan recent activity. Note any payment you do not recognise — amounts, times and merchant names — because the bank will ask.
  3. Call the bank’s hotline from anywhere. UAE banks run 24-hour card hotlines; the number is in the app, on statements and on the bank’s website. From abroad, use the international format number. Ask the agent to permanently block the card (a freeze you control can be reversed; a lost-card block cannot) and confirm the block time.
  4. Request the replacement card. Confirm the delivery address — many residents use their office address for courier delivery during working hours. Ask how long it will take and whether a digital card is available instantly in the app for online use.
  5. Dispute anything fraudulent. Tell the agent which transactions are not yours and ask for a dispute or chargeback case number for each. Follow up in writing through the app or email so the timeline is documented.
  6. Report theft to the police if needed. If the card was stolen, or large fraudulent transactions occurred, file a report through the Dubai Police app or the eCrime service. Banks sometimes ask for the report reference for bigger claims.
  7. Update your saved cards. When the new card arrives, update the places that charge the old one: Salik auto-recharge, DEWA direct debit, Careem, streaming services, and your phone wallet (Apple Pay or similar) — tokenised wallet cards sometimes update automatically, but check.
  8. Activate the new card and set limits. Activate it in the app, set sensible daily and online limits, and switch on transaction alerts if they are not already on.

If you find the card again

If you only froze the card yourself in the app and then find it in a coat pocket, you can usually unfreeze it instantly — no harm done, which is why freezing first is smart. But once you have told the bank the card is lost and they have permanently blocked it, it cannot be revived even if it turns up; the replacement is already on its way. Never try to use a card you have reported lost — it will be declined and may be retained by an ATM.

Protecting yourself while the card is missing

A lost card is also a reason to be alert for follow-up scams. Fraudsters who find or steal a card sometimes phone the victim pretending to be the bank and ask for the one-time password “to verify the block”. Your real bank will never ask for your OTP, PIN or full password. Hang up and call the number in the app yourself. Also watch your other accounts for a few weeks: change your banking password if you suspect your phone or wallet was taken with the card, and keep transaction alerts on for every account, not just the affected one.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until morning to report it. Hotlines run all night for a reason. Every hour of delay is an hour someone else can spend with your card.
  • Only freezing, never reporting. A self-freeze is reversible and may not create the formal loss record you need if fraud is disputed later. Always complete the hotline report.
  • Forgetting recurring payments. A blocked card means failed Salik top-ups and utility debits, which can create their own fines and late fees. Update your payment details the day the new card arrives.
  • Sharing the OTP with a “bank” caller. As above: no genuine bank asks for it. This single rule prevents most card fraud losses in the UAE.
  • Not checking small transactions. Test purchases of a few dirhams are how stolen cards are checked. Report even tiny unfamiliar charges — they prove the timeline.

FAQ

Am I responsible for transactions made before I reported the loss?

It depends on the circumstances and your bank’s terms, which is exactly why reporting immediately matters: your position is strongest when the gap between noticing and reporting is minutes, and you can show you kept your PIN and OTP private. Raise disputes for every fraudulent item.

How long does a replacement card take in Dubai?

Typically 3–5 working days by courier within the UAE. Many banks now issue an instant digital version in the app so you can keep paying online while the plastic travels.

Can I block my card while I am travelling outside the UAE?

Yes. The app works anywhere with an internet connection, and every major UAE bank publishes an international hotline number. Block first in the app, then call — do not wait until you fly home.
