As a student in Dubai, you can renew your driving licence online in under fifteen minutes in most cases — no visit to a customer happiness centre is needed if your eye test is done and there are no outstanding fines. The renewal is handled through the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and your new licence can be delivered to you or collected from a centre or kiosk.
Before You Start: Eligibility and Checks
Online renewal works for most UAE driving licences issued in Dubai. Before you begin, make sure:
- Your licence has expired or is close to expiry — you can renew shortly before the expiry date
- You have a valid Emirates ID linked to your traffic file
- You have completed an eye test at an RTA-approved optical centre if the system asks for one
- All traffic fines on your file are paid — the system will not complete renewal with unpaid fines
- Your licence is not suspended and there are no court or police blocks on your file
Students on a university visa follow exactly the same process as other residents. Your student status does not change the fee or validity, but do keep your Emirates ID valid — if your residence visa and Emirates ID have expired, sort that first, because licence services are tied to your ID record. If you hold a licence from another emirate, renew it through that emirate’s authority instead.
Step-by-Step: Renewing Online Through RTA
- Go to the official RTA website or open the RTA Dubai or Dubai Drive app and sign in with UAE Pass or your RTA account.
- Select Driving Licence Services, then Renew Driving Licence, and enter your licence or traffic file details if prompted.
- Check that your eye test result appears. If not, visit an approved optician first — the result is uploaded electronically, usually within a short time.
- Review any fines shown and pay them by card as part of the same transaction.
- Pay the renewal fee by debit or credit card and confirm your delivery choice: courier delivery to your address, or collection from an RTA customer happiness centre or smart kiosk.
- Save the confirmation and temporary licence reference. A digital licence is available in the app while you wait for the physical card.
As a guide, the renewal fee itself is typically around AED 100 to AED 300 depending on age and licence validity period, plus knowledge and innovation fees, eye test charges (often around AED 140 to AED 180 at optical centres as a guide) and delivery if you choose courier. Treat these as estimates only — the RTA portal shows the exact total for your file before you pay, and that is the figure to trust. Always check the official RTA portal for current fees.
Validity, Late Renewal and Fines
For most residents, a renewed Dubai licence is valid for several years — commonly five years for UAE residents and ten years for UAE citizens, with shorter validity for younger drivers. Check the expiry printed on your new card when it arrives. Driving on an expired licence is an offence, and if you renew late there may be a monthly late fee, capped under RTA rules. If your licence has been expired for a very long period — ten years or more — you may be asked to take a driving test again, so do not leave it for years while you are studying abroad or travelling.
Students who split time between Dubai and their home country should set a phone reminder six weeks before expiry. Renewal is quickest while your eye test and Emirates ID are both current, and it avoids problems with car insurance, which can be affected if the driver was unlicensed at the time of an incident. Keep a photo of both sides of your licence on your phone as a backup, though the digital licence in the app is the official backup to rely on.
If Something Goes Wrong Online
If the website blocks your renewal, the reason is usually one of three things: an unpaid fine, a missing eye test, or a file block that needs an in-person visit. Read the on-screen message carefully — it normally names the issue. You can also call the RTA call centre or visit a customer happiness centre with your Emirates ID and old licence. Do not use unofficial websites that claim to renew licences for an extra service charge; the only official routes are RTA’s own website, apps and centres.
FAQ
Do students need a letter from their university to renew?
No. A standard renewal needs your Emirates ID, a valid eye test where required, and payment of fines and fees. No university letter is part of the normal RTA renewal process.
How long does delivery of the new licence take?
Courier delivery typically takes a few working days, and collection from a centre or kiosk can be same-day once the renewal is approved. Your digital licence in the RTA app covers you in the meantime.
Can I renew if I have black points on my licence?
Black points alone do not usually stop renewal, but unpaid fines or a suspension do. Clear any fines in the same transaction and check your file status on the RTA portal.
