How to Register for Corporate Tax With the FTA — A Guide for New Arrivals

New to running a business in Dubai? How to register for UAE corporate tax on EmaraTax, the documents you need, deadlines and what happens next.

If you have just set up a company in Dubai or moved here to run a business, registering for corporate tax with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) through the EmaraTax portal is one of the first jobs to get sorted. Most businesses operating in the UAE fall inside the corporate tax system, even small free zone companies, and registration is done online rather than in person. Working through it early, well before your first return is due, saves a stressful scramble later and helps you avoid late-registration penalties.

Who Needs to Register and When

Corporate tax in the UAE generally applies to businesses and other juridical persons, as well as natural persons running a business activity above certain thresholds set by the FTA. Free zone companies are not automatically outside the net: a qualifying free zone person may benefit from a preferential rate on qualifying income, but that status still starts with registration and ongoing filing. Foundations, government entities enjoying exemptions and extractive businesses have their own rules, so check the FTA’s current guidance for your exact entity type.

Timing matters. The FTA issued deadlines based on when your licence was issued, and new companies are expected to register promptly after incorporation. Do not wait for your first financial year to end. As a guide, set aside time in your first month of trading to complete registration, gather your trade licence details and confirm who in the company will be the authorised signatory on the portal.

Documents and Information You Will Need

The application itself is straightforward, but having everything ready before you log in makes it far quicker. Typically you will need:

  • Your trade licence or incorporation certificate, with the licence number and issue dates
  • The Memorandum of Association, Articles of Association or partnership agreement
  • Emirates ID and passport copies for the authorised signatory
  • Proof of the business address, such as a tenancy contract or utility bill in the company name
  • Contact details, business activities and your financial year start and end dates
  • Your Tax Registration Number for VAT, if you are already VAT registered

Keep scanned copies clear and in date. A mismatch between the licence name, the portal entry and your bank records is one of the most common reasons applications bounce back for correction.

Step-by-Step: Registering on EmaraTax

  1. Create an EmaraTax account on the FTA portal using the authorised signatory’s email, or log in if the business already has one for VAT.
  2. Verify your identity and link the taxable person — your company — to the account.
  3. Open the corporate tax registration service and choose your taxpayer type, such as juridical person, natural person or free zone person.
  4. Enter the licence details, business activities, ownership structure and financial year exactly as they appear on your official documents.
  5. Upload the supporting documents, review every field carefully, then submit and sign with the authorised signatory’s details.
  6. Save the acknowledgement and, once approved, note your corporate tax Tax Registration Number (TRN) somewhere safe.

Approval is often quick when the paperwork matches, but allow a few working days in case the FTA asks for clarification. Keep your login details secure and decide early who else, if anyone, should have delegate access — an accountant can be added rather than sharing passwords.

What Happens After Registration

Registration is the start, not the finish. You will need to keep proper accounting records, prepare financial statements, and file a corporate tax return for each tax period, generally within nine months of your financial year end — confirm the current deadline on the official portal. Even a dormant or zero-income company usually still has a filing obligation. Small businesses may be able to elect for Small Business Relief if they meet the revenue conditions, but that election is made in the return, not instead of one.

Budget for bookkeeping from day one. Fees for an accountant or tax agent vary widely depending on transaction volume, typically from around a few thousand dirhams a year as a guide for a simple company, and it is worth getting quotes rather than treating any figure as fixed. Check the FTA website for current fees and rules before you commit.

Common Mistakes New Arrivals Make

The biggest trap is assuming a free zone or a small turnover means doing nothing. Another is registering with the wrong financial year dates, which then misaligns every future return. Personal and business finances should stay separate: open a business bank account, pay yourself properly, and keep invoices and receipts for at least the retention period the law requires. If your situation involves foreign ownership, branches or income from outside the UAE, take professional advice early — those details change the analysis.

FAQ

Is there a fee to register for corporate tax?
Registration through EmaraTax is generally free of charge, though professional help from a tax agent will cost extra. Always confirm current charges on the FTA portal.

What if I miss the registration deadline?
The FTA can impose an administrative penalty for late registration, so register as soon as you can and keep evidence of your submission date.

Do freelancers need to register?
It depends on your permit type and turnover from business activity. If your freelance income crosses the thresholds in the current FTA guidance, registration applies to you too.
