How to Handle a Breakdown on Sheikh Zayed Road: Safe Stopping, Recovery Trucks and Police Steps

By DXB TALK Β·

A breakdown on Sheikh Zayed Road is frightening because traffic is fast and there is little room for error. Whether it is a puncture, an overheating engine or a warning light that turns serious, your first job is not to fix the car β€” it is to get yourself and your passengers to safety and make the car visible. Cars can be repaired. People cannot be replaced. Work through the steps below calmly and in order.

First: get off the live lanes and make the car visible

If the car is still moving, signal early, check your mirrors and move steadily towards the hard shoulder on the right-hand side. Do not swerve across lanes, and do not stop in a live lane if you can safely roll to the shoulder or an exit. Switch on your hazard lights as soon as you realise you have a problem and keep them on. Once stopped, apply the parking brake and switch off the engine if there is smoke, a fuel smell or a fire risk. If you have a warning triangle and it is safe to place it well behind the car, it can help warn others β€” but never walk into live lanes to do so, and skip it if traffic makes it dangerous.

Getting everyone to a safe place

This step matters more than anything else. If it is safe to exit, have everyone leave from the side away from traffic and move behind the roadside barrier, keeping children close. Do not stand between your car and the traffic, and do not sit inside it if you can safely wait away from the road β€” a stopped car remains vulnerable to a secondary collision. Take phones, water and essentials with you, especially in summer heat. Never attempt to cross Sheikh Zayed Road on foot. If someone is injured, or leaving the car would put them at greater risk, stay put with hazards on, seatbelts fastened, and call 999 straight away.

What not to attempt at the roadside

Fast, multi-lane roads are not the place for repairs, even ones that look simple at home. In particular:

  • Do not change a wheel or work under or beside the car on the traffic side
  • Do not open the bonnet and lean over a hot engine in a live-lane environment β€” overheating cars can scald
  • Do not accept a tow from an unmarked passing vehicle or agree a price in a panic without checking who they are
  • Do not walk along the hard shoulder to a petrol station or exit β€” wait for help to come to you
  • Do not use your phone while standing close to moving traffic; move to safety first, then call

Minor fixes are for car parks and quiet streets. On Sheikh Zayed Road, recovery to a safe location comes first.

Calling for help: police, patrols and recovery trucks

Once you are safe, call for assistance. In an emergency, or if your car is blocking a lane, there is a collision, a fire or an injury, call 999 and follow Dubai Police instructions. For a straightforward breakdown, contact your insurer’s roadside assistance, your dealer or a reputable recovery company, which will send a flatbed truck β€” the safest way to move a modern car, especially an automatic or electric vehicle. Share your direction of travel, the nearest interchange and which side of the road you are on, so the truck reaches the correct carriageway. Follow directions from Dubai Police and RTA patrols on arrival. Confirm the destination garage before the car is loaded.

After you are recovered

Once you and the car are safe, get the fault diagnosed properly, ask for a written estimate, and check whether your insurance or warranty covers recovery and repair. If the breakdown followed a recent service, contact that garage with your invoice before authorising further work. Afterwards, restock what would have helped: water, a reflective vest and a warning triangle.

No appointment or meeting is ever worth a risk on Sheikh Zayed Road. Stop as far right as you safely can, hazards on, everyone safely behind the barrier, then call for professional help β€” that simple order will handle most breakdowns safely and calmly.
