You can get money back from a lost or expired Nol card only if it was a personalised (registered) card — a blue personal card or a registered gold/silver card — because the RTA can trace its balance to you. Report it through the RTA website, the S’hail app or the RTA call centre, and the remaining balance is transferred to a replacement card or refunded under the RTA’s current process. Anonymous cards sadly cannot be refunded, because there is no proof the card was yours.
Quick facts
- Who handles it: The RTA — via rta.ae, the S’hail app, RTA customer happiness centres and the RTA call centre (800 9090)
- Refundable: Personalised/registered Nol cards (personal blue card and registered cards) with a traceable balance
- Not refundable: Anonymous silver/gold cards and paper red tickets — the balance cannot be verified as yours
- Cost: A replacement card fee typically applies, around AED 5–30 depending on card type — check the official app/portal for the current fee
- Time needed: Blocking is immediate once reported; balance transfer or refund typically takes several working days
How to claim your refund, step by step
- Act fast and report the loss. The sooner you report, the less balance someone else could spend. Report online at rta.ae, in the S’hail app, at any RTA customer happiness centre, or by calling 800 9090.
- Give your card details. You will need the Nol card tag/card number (from a receipt, the app, or your registration record), your Emirates ID number and your mobile number. This is exactly why registering a card in the app matters.
- Ask for the card to be blocked. The RTA blocks the lost card so the balance is frozen at the value recorded when you reported it.
- Choose a replacement card. Apply for a new personalised Nol card at a Metro station ticket office or RTA centre with your Emirates ID, or order through official RTA channels.
- Request the balance transfer or refund. Tell the RTA you want the old balance moved to your new card. For expired cards, present the expired card itself at a ticket office — the balance can usually be transferred to a new card on the spot or after processing.
- Wait for confirmation. Keep your case reference number. Transfers typically land within several working days; check the balance on the new card in the S’hail app or at a station machine.
- For expired cards that were never registered, take the physical card to a Metro ticket office and ask what can be done — if the card ID can still be read, staff may be able to move the balance to a new card you buy there.
Expired cards: what actually happens
Nol cards have a validity period (typically five years for silver/gold cards). When a card expires, the card stops working at gates but the stored value does not simply vanish in RTA’s system. If you still hold the card, a ticket office can usually help you move the balance onto a replacement card for the price of the new card. If you threw the expired card away and it was never registered, there is normally no way to recover the money — treat this as a lesson to register every card you top up significantly.
How to protect yourself next time
Register your card in S’hail. Linking the card to your account takes a minute and creates the paper trail a refund needs. Top up in smaller amounts if you use an anonymous card — AED 20 to AED 50 at a time limits your exposure. Consider Nol Pay or a digital Nol on your phone where supported, so a lost physical card does not mean a lost balance. And take a photo of the back of your card: the tag number in that photo is often enough to start a blocking request.
Common mistakes
Waiting weeks to report a loss is the biggest one — spend on the card before you report is generally gone. Another is assuming a silver card bought at a station is refundable; unless you registered it, it is anonymous by design. Finally, keep receipts from large top-ups until the balance shows in the app, so you can prove the last amount added if there is a dispute.
FAQ
I lost an anonymous silver Nol card with AED 80 on it. Can I get it back?
Almost certainly not. Without registration there is no way for the RTA to prove the card or balance belonged to you. Register your next card in the S’hail app as soon as you buy it.
How long does a Nol balance transfer take?
Blocking is immediate; the transfer to a replacement card typically takes several working days. Keep your case reference and check the new card’s balance in S’hail.
Where can I report a lost Nol card in person?
At any RTA customer happiness centre or Metro station ticket office. Bring your Emirates ID and, if you have it, the lost card’s tag number from the app or a receipt.
