Failing Your RTA Road Test in Dubai: Retest Rules, Extra Classes and Appeals

By DXB TALK Β·

Hearing that you have not passed the RTA road test is disappointing and costly, but it is not a dead end β€” it is a defined process with clear next steps. This guide explains what happens after a fail, how many extra classes you may need, how retests are booked, what it typically costs, and your options if you believe the result was unfair.

What Happens Immediately After a Fail

At the end of the test, the examiner will explain the outcome, and your report is recorded on the RTA system, usually accessible through your institute. Read it carefully. Examiners record specific faults β€” for example, failing to check mirrors and blind spots, rolling a stop, poor roundabout discipline, hesitation that disrupts traffic, or a serious error such as mounting a kerb.

Separate two kinds of fail: a major fail follows one dangerous mistake, while an accumulated fail means smaller faults added up. The fix differs β€” one habit to correct, or general tidiness. Ask your instructor at your institute β€” such as Emirates Driving Institute, Galadari, Al Ahli, Belhasa or Dubai Driving Centre β€” to turn the report into a lesson plan.

Extra Classes and Booking Your Retest

You cannot usually rebook for the next morning with no further training. Candidates who fail are typically required to take additional classes first β€” commonly around four hours after early attempts, often around eight hours after multiple attempts. The exact number depends on your history and current RTA policy, so let your institute confirm what your file shows.

Those extra classes are not meant to be a punishment lap. Use them deliberately:

  • Recreate the test conditions β€” same area, similar time of day, examiner-style silence from your instructor.
  • Drill the exact faults on your report until they stop appearing, rather than spreading time evenly over everything.
  • Practise parking and yard manoeuvres again too, so rustiness does not cause a second disappointment.
  • Ask your instructor honestly when you are ready, and book the retest for a time when you are alert, not straight after a night shift.

Once classes are complete, your institute books the retest. Slots are generally available reasonably quickly, but peak periods can mean a wait of days or longer.

What a Retest Typically Costs

A fail adds up in three places: the extra lessons, the RTA retest fee, and sometimes a fresh internal assessment or file charge at your institute. In total, learners often pay somewhere in the region of several hundred to over a thousand dirhams per extra attempt, depending on how many classes are required and their institute’s prices. Treat any single figure you hear as approximate β€” get a written quote from your institute covering lessons, test fee and any shuttle or administration charges before you pay, and check rta.ae for the current official test fees.

Also ask about your package: some fixed-price packages cover retests differently from pay-as-you-go courses.

If You Think the Result Was Unfair

Arguing at the test centre will not help, but there is a formal route: raise a complaint or appeal through the RTA β€” via rta.ae, its call centre, or a Customer Happiness Centre β€” and through your institute, explaining factually what happened. Appeals are most credible when they point to a procedural problem, such as the test being cut short or a fault recorded for something that did not occur.

Be realistic: an appeal can take time, and many candidates find retaking the test is the faster path. If you appeal, keep it polite, brief and factual, and keep preparing in the meantime.

Most drivers who fail in Dubai pass on a later attempt, often becoming safer drivers for the extra practice. Read the report, take the required classes with a purpose, and book the retest when your instructor’s mock tests say you are ready β€” not just when your frustration says you are. Your licence will taste all the sweeter for it.
