Attesting Nicaragua Documents for the UAE: Certificates, Legalisation and Where to Apply

How to get Nicaraguan birth, marriage and degree certificates attested for UAE use — the legalisation chain, step by step, and the mistakes to avoid.

f 𝕏 in WA

If you are bringing Nicaraguan documents to the UAE — a degree for a work permit, a marriage certificate for family sponsorship, a birth certificate for your child’s visa or school file — they will not be accepted at face value. The UAE requires foreign documents to pass through an attestation (legalisation) chain that proves the signatures and stamps on them are genuine. The process is bureaucratic but logical, and most delays come from doing the steps in the wrong order. Here is how it works.

Which documents usually need attestation

  • University degrees and educational certificates — for employment visas and professional licensing
  • Marriage certificates — for sponsoring a spouse
  • Birth certificates — for children’s residence visas and school enrolment
  • Police clearance certificates — when an employer or authority requests one
  • Commercial documents — for business setup, such as company papers and powers of attorney

Not every situation needs every document attested. Before spending money, confirm with the requesting party — your employer, the immigration authority or the school — exactly which documents they require and whether they need full legalisation or an official translation as well.

The legalisation chain, step by step

  1. Notarisation and local authentication in Nicaragua: The document is first verified by the competent Nicaraguan authorities. For public documents this generally involves the issuing institution and authentication through Nicaragua’s foreign ministry (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores), which certifies the signatures on the document.
  2. Check whether an apostille applies — and its limits: Nicaragua is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, which simplifies legalisation between member countries. However, the UAE is not a Hague Convention member, so an apostille alone is generally not sufficient for UAE use. The usual route for the UAE is the full embassy legalisation chain described here. Confirm the current requirement with the UAE authority requesting your document before choosing a route.
  3. UAE embassy legalisation: The authenticated document is then legalised by the UAE embassy or consulate accredited to Nicaragua — which may be located in Nicaragua or in a third country covering it. Verify which UAE mission covers Nicaragua through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs before sending documents anywhere.
  4. UAE MOFA attestation: Once you are in the Emirates, the final step is attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), available through its online services and service centres. After MOFA attestation, the document is officially recognised across the UAE.
  5. Official translation: Documents in Spanish usually need a legal translation into Arabic (sometimes English is accepted) by a UAE-licensed legal translator, done after attestation so the translation covers the attested original and its stamps.

Where to apply and who can help

Steps in Nicaragua are handled by Nicaraguan notaries, the issuing institutions and the foreign ministry; the UAE legalisation step is handled by the UAE mission covering Nicaragua; and MOFA attestation happens inside the UAE. If you are already in Dubai, licensed attestation service companies can manage the whole chain on your behalf, shipping documents between the stages — this costs more (as a guide, expect fees per document plus courier charges, varying by document type and speed) but saves you coordinating across countries. Choose only a company licensed in the UAE, get the total price and timeline in writing, and hand over documents against a receipt.

Mistakes that waste weeks

Attesting a photocopy instead of the original; laminating certificates (some authorities reject laminated documents); getting the translation done before attestation; sending documents to the wrong embassy because an old website said it covered Nicaragua; and spelling mismatches — your name must read identically on your passport, certificates and applications, including how Spanish double surnames are rendered. Fix name inconsistencies first, with official guidance, or every later step inherits the problem.

Timelines and costs, honestly

As a guide, a full chain usually takes two to six weeks depending on courier times and how quickly each authority processes its stage, and costs build up stage by stage: local fees in Nicaragua, embassy legalisation fees, courier charges, MOFA fees and translation fees. Anyone promising full legalisation in a couple of days for a suspiciously low price is cutting a corner that the UAE authority may spot later — build in time, keep copies of everything at every stage, and track your documents with courier tracking numbers.

FAQ

Is an apostille from Nicaragua enough for the UAE?
Generally no. The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so UAE authorities usually require the full legalisation chain ending in UAE MOFA attestation. Confirm the requirement for your specific document and purpose first.

Can I attest documents while I am already in Dubai?
Yes — many people use a licensed UAE attestation company that sends documents back through the Nicaraguan stages and the UAE mission for you. The MOFA step itself is completed inside the UAE.

Do my documents need translating?
Usually yes. Spanish-language documents typically require a legal Arabic translation by a UAE-licensed translator once attestation is complete.
