If you are applying for a new UAE residence visa, renewing one, or changing jobs in Dubai, a medical fitness test is usually part of the process. It can feel mysterious β a blood sample, a chest X-ray, then a wait. In practice it is a standard public health screening run through Dubai Health Authority (DHA) medical fitness centres, linked to your visa application with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
Who needs the test and where it happens
Most first-time residents, people renewing residency, and many people changing sponsors or visa categories must complete medical fitness screening. Your employer or sponsor will typically start the application. Tests for visa purposes are not done at ordinary private clinics β you need an authorised medical fitness centre.
Bring your passport, entry permit or visa application details, Emirates ID if you already have one, and a photograph if requested. Requirements vary by visa type, so check your application instructions and the DHA website before you go.
What the blood test and chest X-ray check
The screening focuses on specific communicable conditions set out in UAE regulations, not general health. The blood test typically screens for conditions such as HIV and hepatitis, and in some categories syphilis and other infections. The chest X-ray is mainly used to look for signs of pulmonary tuberculosis, including old or active disease.
Some job categories have additional elements. People working in food handling, salons, nurseries, and healthcare, for example, may face extra tests because their roles involve close contact with the public. If you are pregnant, tell the centre before the X-ray β staff will advise on shielding or deferral according to current DHA practice.
What happens on the day
Most visits follow a similar flow:
- Registration and identity check, with your application linked to your passport
- Payment of the government fee, which varies by service speed and category
- Blood sample taken by a nurse, usually a quick draw from the arm
- Chest X-ray in a separate room, changing into a gown if asked
- Confirmation that both parts are recorded before you leave
The appointment itself is often quite short, typically under an hour if queues are reasonable. Keep your receipt and application reference safe β you will need them to track the result.
What can trigger a retest or follow-up
A retest request is worrying, but it does not always mean a serious finding. Common reasons include a blood sample that was insufficient or unclear, an X-ray image that was blurred or incomplete, or a borderline result that needs confirmation. A scar or shadow on a chest X-ray from a past chest infection or previously treated tuberculosis can also prompt further review, sometimes including sputum tests, repeat imaging, or referral to a specialist fitness committee.
If you have had tuberculosis in the past, bring any old treatment records you have. Being open about past treatment helps the team interpret old scarring correctly. In some cases the outcome is fit, in others fit with treatment or follow-up, and in a smaller number unfit for specific categories under current regulations. Rules on which conditions affect which categories do change, so avoid relying on forum posts and confirm through DHA or GDRFA.
Costs, timing and getting your result
Standard fees are typically a few hundred dirhams, with express or VIP services costing more for faster processing. Always confirm the current fee for your category on the DHA site or at the centre, as prices are updated from time to time.
Regular results are often available within around one to two working days, and faster services may be same-day, but this is approximate and delays happen when a retest is needed. Results are usually shared electronically with the immigration system and your sponsor or employer, rather than as a detailed lab report to you. You will generally be told fit, or contacted if more steps are needed.
If you are asked to return, go promptly and follow the referral exactly. Missing a follow-up can stall your Emirates ID and residency. For official confirmation, use DHA, GDRFA, or ICP channels β they hold the current rules for your exact visa type.
