How to Prepare a Spare Room for a Long-Term Guest Staying in Your Dubai Home

Having a parent, sibling or close friend stay for several weeks can be one of the pleasures of life in Dubai — and it works best when the spare room is genuinely ready before they arrive. A little preparation turns a mattress in a storage room into a calm, private space, helps your guest feel independent rather than in the way, and protects your own routines during a long stay.

Clear It Properly, Not Just on the Surface

Start a week or two ahead. Move out the things that usually live in the spare room: suitcases, ironing, paperwork, exercise kit and boxes waiting to be sorted. If everything simply gets piled into a corner, your guest will feel they are sleeping in storage, and you will keep needing to come in for things. Empty at least half the wardrobe or hanging space and a couple of drawers, and add a handful of spare hangers.

Clean as if you were paying to stay there yourself. Fresh bedding, dusted surfaces, a vacuumed floor and a checked air-conditioning vent make a bigger difference than any decoration. Test the lights, remote controls and plug sockets, and leave a small waste bin and a box of tissues within reach.

Make the Bed and Bathroom Comfortable

Dubai homes can feel cold with air conditioning at night and warm without it, so give your guest control where you can. Leave an extra light blanket as well as the duvet, explain how the air conditioning and any fan work, and show them once rather than assuming they will ask. A bedside lamp, a place to charge a phone, and a glass for water are small things guests remember.

In the bathroom they will use, clear a shelf or basket for their toiletries, put out fresh towels, and stock the basics: soap, tissues and spare toilet rolls in sight, not hidden in another room. If the bathroom is shared, agree simple morning timings early in the stay, before anyone gets quietly frustrated.

Small Touches That Help a Long Stay

  • A spare house key or access card, with building rules explained
  • Your Wi-Fi name and password written down in the room
  • A short note on laundry, bins and recycling in your home
  • Space in the fridge and a kitchen cupboard for their own food
  • A spare umbrella, reusable bag and water bottle for outings
  • Chargers or adaptors suitable for UAE three-pin sockets

For stays of more than a few days, independence matters. Show your guest the nearest supermarket, pharmacy and public transport stop, and explain how taxis and the RTA’s official services work if they are new to Dubai. Check visitor visa and entry requirements only through official UAE government sources if they ask, as rules depend on nationality and can change.

Talk About House Rules Early and Kindly

Most long-stay tension comes from things nobody mentioned. On the first evening, cover the basics in a friendly way: quiet hours if you work early, how visitors and deliveries work in your building, any rules from your landlord or building management about guests, and how long the stay is planned to last. If your tenancy or building has specific guest procedures, check them in advance rather than discovering them at the security desk.

Money is worth a gentle, clear conversation too. Decide together how shared groceries, takeaways and outings will be handled, so generosity does not quietly turn into resentment on either side. Many hosts cover household basics and let guests treat the family to meals or trips out, but there is no single right arrangement — only one you have actually discussed.

Plan Time Together and Time Apart

Finally, think about rhythm. Plan a few shared highlights — a beach morning, a market, a favourite restaurant — and leave plenty of unplanned time. Your guest may enjoy exploring alone or simply reading on the balcony, and you will still need evenings for work, friends and rest. A spare room that is comfortable, private and well explained makes all of that easier, and turns a long visit into the kind of stay everyone hopes to repeat.
