Two weeks away is long enough for a proper break and just long enough for small things at home to go wrong: a fridge ripening, a car battery giving up in the heat, or a bill missed while offline. A short run-through in the last few days before you travel keeps your Dubai life ticking over, so coming home feels like a continuation rather than a rescue mission.
Put Bills and Regular Payments on Autopilot
Start with money. Check that regular payments such as utilities, telecoms, school-related payments and any subscriptions will be covered while you are away, whether through autopay arrangements, direct debits or a sufficient account balance. It overlaps with ordinary bill management, but travel is when gaps show, because a missed payment notice may sit unread in an inbox you are deliberately ignoring.
Note payment due dates that fall during your trip and deal with early ones before you leave. Keep banking apps accessible in case a verification step appears, and tell your bank about your travel in whatever way it currently requests, since requirements vary and change.
Arrange Cover for Plants and Pets
Plants struggle most in summer, when a balcony or a bright indoor spot can dry soil out quickly. Group pots together in the coolest practical place, water thoroughly before you go, and for two weeks, ask a neighbour or friend to look in once or twice, or consider simple self-watering arrangements for hardier plants. Accept that tender plants may still sulk, and do not leave anything precious relying on a gadget you have never tested.
Pets need firmer plans. Whether you use a trusted sitter, a friend your pet knows, or a licensed boarding or cattery option, book early in peak holiday periods, leave written notes on food, medication and vet details, and do a short handover. A trial night can help an anxious pet, and it helps you travel without worrying.
Think About the Car, Parking and the Heat
A car left unused for two weeks in Dubai heat faces two main issues: the battery and the interior. In general terms, batteries can drain over time even when a car is parked, and heat is hard on them, so a car that was already slow to start deserves attention before a trip rather than after it. Some owners ask a trusted friend to start or briefly drive the car during a longer absence; if you do this, make sure insurance and permission are properly in order.
- Park in shade or covered parking where you can, which protects the interior and paint.
- Remove anything heat-sensitive, including aerosols, electronics, food and cosmetics.
- Clear out rubbish and crumbs so the car does not attract pests while it sits.
- Leave the car locked, tidy and with enough fuel for the trip home from the airport.
Clear the Fridge and Set the Kitchen Straight
Work through the fridge in the last three days. Eat, freeze or give away milk, cooked leftovers, soft fruit, salads and opened items that will not last your trip plus a buffer. Hard cheese, eggs in date and unopened long-life items often fare better, but if in doubt, it is kinder to your future self to bin something borderline than to come home to it.
Empty the kitchen bin last thing, run and empty the dishwasher, and wipe surfaces so nothing sticky is waiting. Some households turn the fridge to a slightly less cold setting for a short trip, while others leave it running normally; either way, avoid switching it off entirely with food inside, and check doors are properly closed before you lock up.
Tell the People Who Need to Know
In some communities and buildings in Dubai, it is common and sensible to let building security or management know you will be away, in general terms, so an empty flat does not cause concern and any access by arranged visitors is expected. Practices vary by building, so follow whatever your community normally does. Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye out and to collect anything left at your door.
Finally, think about mail and documents. Arrange for important deliveries to wait or go to someone you trust, keep passports and travel documents together and accessible while you travel, and photograph key documents as a backup. Lock up, set the air conditioning to a moderate setting if you leave it running, as many residents do to limit heat and humidity, and head off knowing home is looking after itself.
