How to Find a Hobby Class in Dubai: Pottery, Dance and Photography Workshops for Adults

By DXB TALK ·

Starting a new hobby as an adult in Dubai is easier than many newcomers expect. The city has pottery studios, dance schools and photography groups in areas from Alserkal Avenue and Al Quoz to Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Business Bay. Classes run in the evenings and at weekends to fit around work, and most welcome complete beginners. The challenge is not finding options, it is choosing the right format, price and location so you keep going after the first session.

Decide What Kind of Class Suits You

Think about whether you want a one-off taster, a short course or a drop-in membership. A single workshop is a low-risk way to test pottery or photography without buying equipment. A four to eight week course gives you structure and the same group each week, which helps if you also want to meet people. Drop-in dance classes suit shift workers, because you pay per session and do not fall behind.

Also consider group size. Smaller groups usually mean more feedback, especially for wheel-throwing or camera technique. Check whether materials are included, and whether the venue is easy to reach after work.

Pottery and Ceramics

Pottery is one of the most popular adult hobbies in Dubai. Studios in Al Quoz, Jumeirah and Al Fahidi usually offer hand-building for beginners, then wheel-throwing once you have the basics. Most provide clay, tools, aprons and firing, but ask whether glazing and a second firing cost extra.

  • Start with a hand-building taster before paying for a long wheel course
  • Ask how many finished pieces are included and when you can collect them
  • Check if you can reschedule if work runs late
  • Wear clothes you do not mind getting dusty

Prices vary widely. As a rough guide, a single workshop might cost approximately AED 150 to AED 350, with multi-week courses costing more. Prices change, so confirm the current fee and what is included directly with the studio before paying.

Dance Classes for Adults

Dubai studios offer salsa, bachata, hip-hop, contemporary, ballet for adults, Bollywood and ballroom. Beginner levels are genuinely beginner-friendly in most schools, and many run a free or discounted first class. You do not usually need a partner for Latin or social dance classes, as partners rotate during the session.

Look for a clear level system so you are not placed with experienced dancers in week one. Ask about footwear and whether classes are progressive or standalone. Studios in JLT, Barsha Heights, Business Bay and Dubai Media City are popular for after-work classes.

Fees are often approximately AED 60 to AED 120 for a drop-in session, or lower per class if you buy a package. Check the package expiry date, as unused classes are rarely refunded.

Photography Workshops and Walks

Photography suits people who prefer to learn outdoors. Workshops cover smartphone photography, camera basics, portrait work, street photography in Old Dubai, and desert or architecture shoots. Photowalks around Al Fahidi, Deira, the creek and Dubai Marina are a good way to learn composition while exploring the city.

  • Beginners can start with a phone; you do not need an expensive camera first
  • Ask how much is theory and how much is practical shooting time
  • Check group size, as very large groups get less individual feedback
  • Respect local rules and privacy when photographing people and private property

Always follow guidance from Dubai authorities and venue security about where photography is permitted, especially around government buildings, airports and private communities. If a workshop includes a special location, the organiser should arrange any needed permission in advance.

Where to Search and How to Book

Start with community arts spaces, cultural districts and well-reviewed independent studios. Dubai Culture and Arts Authority supports many cultural venues and seasonal programmes worth checking. Social media and word of mouth are also useful, but verify the venue address, instructor experience and cancellation policy before you transfer money.

Making the Hobby Stick

The best class is the one you attend regularly. Choose a location near home or work, put sessions in your calendar like appointments, and set a simple goal for the first month, such as finishing one pot, learning one dance routine or completing a small photo series of your neighbourhood. Most people quit because the logistics are hard, not because they dislike the hobby.

An evening class can become exercise, stress relief and a social circle at the same time. Start small, book a beginner session this week, and build from there.
