How to Understand Your Car Service Contract in Dubai: Inclusions, Wear Items and Renewals

A car service contract can save you money and stress in Dubai, but only if you know exactly what it includes. A dealer or workshop may offer one covering routine servicing for a set number of years or kilometres. Some jobs are included, others are classed as wear and tear, and a few important items may not be covered at all. Reading the small print before you sign helps you avoid surprise bills.

What a Typical Contract Usually Covers

Most contracts in Dubai are built around the manufacturer’s service schedule. That usually means the regular services due every so many kilometres or months, whichever comes first. Labour for those scheduled services and the basic parts changed at each interval are the core of the deal.

  • Engine oil and oil filter changes at scheduled intervals
  • Air filter and, at certain intervals, spark plugs or other schedule items
  • Fluid checks and top-ups listed in the service book, such as coolant and brake fluid
  • Multi-point inspections, safety checks and a basic wash
  • Labour costs for the scheduled work itself

What counts as scheduled differs between brands and models, so check the schedule for your exact car. Keep the booklet and contract together, and ask the adviser to record every visit.

Wear and Tear Items That Are Often Excluded

This is where most misunderstandings happen. Wear and tear items wear out through normal use, and many contracts exclude them even though they are essential and can be costly. You may be told during a service that something needs replacing, and then learn it is not part of your contract.

Common excluded or partly covered items include brake pads and discs, tyres, wheel alignment and balancing, the battery, wiper blades, bulbs, belts that are not part of the schedule, and air conditioning gas top-ups. Suspension parts, clutch wear on manual cars, and damage from sand, heat or poor roads are also often outside the contract.

Heat matters in Dubai. Batteries and tyres can wear faster in summer, so budget separately for these items.

Mileage, Time Limits and Missed Services

Contracts usually have two limits: a time period, such as three or five years, and a mileage cap. The contract ends when you reach whichever limit comes first. If you drive long distances between emirates, you may use up the kilometres well before the years are over.

  • Check whether services must be done within a small window of the due date or mileage
  • Ask what happens if you miss a service or have it done late
  • Find out if the contract can be used at other branches of the same dealer group
  • Ask whether the contract transfers to a new owner if you sell the car
  • Note whether recovery, a courtesy car or collection is included, or is an extra

Some contracts become void, or a claim can be refused, if services are missed or done outside the approved network. If you travel or the car is unused for a while, contact the dealer in advance and get any agreement in writing.

What Happens at Renewal or Extension

As your contract nears its end, you may be offered an extension. Prices vary widely by brand, model, age and mileage and tend to rise as the car gets older, so treat any quote as specific to your car. An extension may also cover less than the original, or require an inspection first.

Before you renew, add up what you actually used, note what you paid for separately, and compare the extension price with paying for services as you go. For cars out of warranty, an independent specialist can sometimes be better value.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Ask for the full list of inclusions and exclusions in writing. Ask what a typical service would cost without the contract, what wear items cost on your model, and how extra work is approved before it is done.

A good contract gives you predictable costs, a proper service history and peace of mind. A contract you do not understand can do the opposite. Take an evening to read it properly, highlight anything unclear, and get answers in writing. That small effort makes every service visit simpler for the life of the car.
