Sell Your Car Safely to a Private Buyer: Common Mistakes That Cause Delays (And How to Avoid Them)

Sell your car privately in Dubai without transfer-day chaos, covering fines, finance clearance, RTA paperwork, payment safety and ad mistakes.

Selling a car privately in Dubai usually gets you a better price than a trade-in, but the deal only completes at the RTA transfer — and that is exactly where unpaid fines, an uncleared loan or a buyer who pays the wrong way can unravel weeks of advertising. Prepare the car, the paperwork and the payment method before you list it, and the actual sale becomes a single, calm visit rather than a series of expensive surprises.

Before You Advertise: Clear the Car’s Record

Start with the car’s legal status, not its paintwork. Check for outstanding traffic fines, Salik penalties and any mortgage or finance flag on the vehicle. A car with active bank finance cannot simply be transferred; the loan must be settled and the bank’s clearance registered in the system, which can take several working days, so start that process before you promise a buyer a completion date.

Make sure the registration card (Mulkiya) is valid or be upfront if renewal and testing will be part of the deal. Gather the service history, spare key and any warranty papers — a tidy folder justifies your price and speeds up a serious buyer’s decision.

  • Emirates ID and driving licence for the RTA transfer
  • Vehicle registration card (Mulkiya)
  • Bank clearance letter or electronic clearance if the car was financed
  • Passing vehicle test result, where the transfer requires one
  • Service history, invoices and warranty documents for the buyer
  • Both keys, tools, spare wheel and accessories included in the sale

Mistake 1: Weak Adverts and Unsafe Viewings

Blurry night photos, no mileage and a price copied from a different model attract time-wasters and low offers. Photograph the car in daylight from every angle, including the dashboard mileage, tyres and any scratches. Write honestly about accident history and repainting — buyers in Dubai routinely run a comprehensive test at a garage or RTA-affiliated centre, and hidden faults found there kill trust and the deal.

For viewings, meet in a public, well-lit place, bring a friend for evening appointments, and ride along on test drives rather than handing over keys. Never share your home location, Emirates ID copies or bank details with strangers who have only sent messages.

Mistake 2: Accepting the Wrong Kind of Payment

This is the mistake that costs sellers real money. Personal cheques can bounce and cashier’s orders can be forged, so the safest pattern is simple: complete payment and transfer together at the RTA centre, using a method your bank confirms as cleared — commonly a manager’s cheque verified with the issuing bank, or an instant bank transfer you watch clear in your account before signing.

  1. Agree the price and who pays transfer and testing fees, in writing by message.
  2. Meet at an RTA service centre or authorised testing and transfer facility.
  3. Settle any fines on the vehicle so the file is clear for transfer.
  4. Complete and pass the vehicle technical test if it is due.
  5. Confirm cleared payment, then sign the transfer and hand over keys and documents.
  6. Cancel or transfer your Salik tag and inform your insurer the same day.

Never hand over the car on a promise to pay after transfer. Once the vehicle is in the buyer’s name, your leverage is gone and recovery becomes a civil dispute.

Insurance, Plates and After the Sale

Your insurance policy does not transfer automatically to the buyer. Ask your insurer about cancelling from the transfer date and whether a pro-rata refund applies, and keep the RTA transfer receipt as proof. The buyer arranges their own insurance before the transfer can be completed, so allow time for them to buy a policy in the centre or beforehand.

Costs vary by vehicle and emirate; as a guide, transfer and testing fees combined are typically a few hundred dirhams, but treat that as an estimate only and check the current fees on the official RTA portal before your visit. Keep copies of everything — advert, messages agreeing the price, transfer paper and payment proof — for at least a year, in case fines from before the transfer date arrive late.

FAQ

Can I sell a car that still has a bank loan? Yes, but the loan must be settled and the mortgage cleared in the system first, often with the buyer paying the bank directly as part of an agreed, documented process.

Who pays the RTA transfer fees? It is negotiable, though buyers commonly pay transfer costs; agree it before the appointment so there is no argument at the counter.

What about fines recorded after I sell? Fines are tied to dates and plate records, so keep your transfer receipt and contact the issuing authority promptly with it if an old or new fine is assigned incorrectly.
